FAQs

How do I know if I might have ADHD?

ADHD symptoms can look different for everyone, but in adults they may include:
• Difficulty staying organised or following conversations
• Feeling restless, fidgeting, or always “on edge”
• Making impulsive decisions, blurting things out, or finding it hard to wait

At what age can ADHD be diagnosed?

For adults, ADHD can be diagnosed from age 18 onwards. For children we can do assessments from the age of  6 years old.

Does ADHD run in families?

Yes, genetics play a major role. Research shows that ADHD has a heritability of around 70-80%, which is one of  the highest for any mental health condition. This means if you have ADHD, there's a strong chance your  children or other close relatives may also have it, though it's not a guarantee.

What are the benefits of an accurate diagnosis?

An accurate ADHD diagnosis can help you:
• Better understand yourself and your symptoms
• Access the right treatment and support
• Learn strategies to manage daily challenges
• Improve work, relationships, and overall wellbeing
• Reduce frustration by knowing what’s behind your difficulties

Can I “pass” or “fail” an ADHD assessment?

No. The assessment isn’t a test – you can’t pass or fail. It’s about understanding your symptoms, how they affect you, and whether you meet the criteria for ADHD so  we can help you in the best way.

How do I start an ADHD assessment?

Just call or email us (adhd@welllife-clinic.co.uk) to get started:
Cobham: 01932 391 883 | 5 Between Streets, Cobham KT11 1AA
Oxted: 01883 338 336 | 125-131 Station Road East, Oxted RH8 0QE
One of our ADHD treatment coordinators will speak with you then send you a quick “pre-assessment”  questionnaire. A specially trained GP will review it and decide if a full ADHD assessment is the right next step.

How long will the ADHD assessment take?

We aim to complete the full process within 4 weeks from your first contact. To start you need to complete some  online questionnaires followed by attending the Clinic for a Qbtest – a 20min computer-based test. You will  then be invited to see the specialist GP for a 60min in-person assessment appointment. Roughly 2 weeks later  you will be invited back to the Clinic for a 20min appointment where your results will be shared with you.  Following this appointment, you will receive an electronic copy of your assessment report.

Will the assessment involve medication?

No, the assessment itself does not involve medication. If you are diagnosed, you can choose whether to  explore medication as part of your treatment.

Can I be assessed if I’m taking other medication?

We can assess for ADHD if you are already taking medication. Some medications (e.g., stimulants,  antidepressants) can mask or mimic ADHD symptoms, therefore there may be a conversation where you stop  them temporarily (under supervision). This will all be guided by one of our specialised GPs.

What questions will I be asked?

Your assessment will include questions about:
• Attention, organisation, and memory
• Impulsivity or restlessness
• Work or study performance
• Relationships and daily life
• Your history of symptoms
• How some of these traits impact you in different parts of your life

What happens after the assessment?

You will usually receive:
• A diagnosis (if you meet the criteria for ADHD)
• A written report of our findings
• Recommendations for treatment (medication, counselling, ongoing care)

Do I need to contact Surrey Borders Partnership whilst going through my treatment

No, as your care has been transferred to Well Life Clinic, you do not need to contact Surrey Borders Partnership  whilst going through the assessment process.

Do I need to pay for this assessment?

No, Well Life Clinic is working with Surrey Borders Partnership to get waiting times down for adult ADHD  assessments. The cost will be covered by them.

Will you tell my GP that I am having this assessment

Yes, Well Life Clinic will inform your GP that you are having an ADHD assessment with us. You do not need to  contact them.

What if I have ADHD and want to start medication?

You will have a Medication Initiation appointment with the GP. Then another GP appointment after the first,  second, third and six month mark. This is to ensure the medication is working for you and to check for any side  effects. After 6 months you may be transferred back to your NHS GP under a Shared Care Agreement. There will  also be an annual review. See Shared Care Agreement below.

Can I get my medication without seeing the GP at one of my reviews?

No, you will not be able to get your medication without seeing the GP for a Medication Review appointment.  Additionally, the team on reception at WLC will not be able to arrange a prescription for you unless you have  had your medication reviews.

How do I get my medication

Your prescription will be made available to collect at the Clinic where you have your assessment. You will be  notified when it is ready, following the medication review.

What does Shared Care Agreement mean?

After being monitored on your medication for six months, you will be referred to your NHS GP under a Shared  Care Agreement. This means that you will have to get your prescriptions from your own GP when you need  them. You will still be asked to attend an annual review at Well Life Clinic to ensure the medication is working  well for you.
