Adult Allergy Testing — FAQs
Q. What test do you use?
A. We use an advanced molecular allergy blood test that screens around 300 potential triggers from a single small blood sample, giving precise, actionable results. It is called the Alex3 and we are the first Clinic in the UK to offer this ground-breaking test.
Q. What is a molecular blood test?
A. It’s a modern test that measures your IgE to individual allergen molecules (components) rather than broad extracts. This helps your clinician tell true allergy from cross-reactivity, understand risk more clearly, and tailor treatment (including whether immunotherapy may help).
Q. Do I need to stop my antihistamines or other medicines first?
A. No. You don’t need to stop medication - the test is independent of your current health status.
Q. Is it a skin-prick test?
A. No - it’s a simple blood test. Compared with traditional skin tests, molecular testing covers many more triggers and offers deeper insight.
Q. Which allergens are covered?
A. A very broad panel: pollens (grass, tree, weed), house-dust mites, pets, moulds/yeasts, foods (grains, nuts/seeds, fruits, legumes), seafood, spices, and insect venoms - selected for clinical relevance.
Q. How much blood is needed?
A. Only a small sample is required and this will be taken in your first appointment with our allergy expert GP.
Q. What is immunotherapy?
A. Allergen immunotherapy is a treatment that helps re-train your immune system to be less reactive to a specific allergen. It involves regular exposure to tiny, precisely measured doses of the allergen over time.
Q. How will this help my treatment?
A. Results guide practical avoidance advice, medication plans, and where appropriate, immunotherapy. The goal is to focus on what truly benefits you.
Q. Why test rather than just treat symptoms?
A. Undetected allergy can worsen over time (for example, respiratory allergy moving toward asthma), and some triggers (foods, insect venoms) may carry serious risk. Knowing your profile supports safer, proactive care.
Q. What happens after my blood test?
A. You will be asked to make a 20 minute follow-up appointment with the doctor a week after your blood test to explain your results in plain language, answer questions, and agree clear next steps. You’ll also receive your report for easy reference.
Q. Do you test children?
A. The testing process for children is being finalised and we hope to announce this imminently.
Q. How do I book an appointment?
A. Please use the button below to contact our front of house team who will contact you to make an appointment with Dr Brigstocke to start your allergy testing journey today.
