Allergy Testing

Whether you or your child are experiencing mild symptoms such as sneezing, itching, rashes and coughs or you have had a more serious or sudden reaction, our expert allergy GP - Dr Lisa Brigstocke, is here to help.

Allergy Testing - clear answers from one small blood test

Are you looking for fast, reliable answers about your allergies? Our Cobham Clinic is proud to be the first in the UK to offer the ALEX³ Allergy Explorer test — a cutting-edge diagnostic tool with exceptional sensitivity and specificity (85–100%). Get comprehensive allergy insights quickly and accurately, all in one visit.

You can now look forward to a time where you can eat with confidence, and enjoy life with clarity.

What is the test and why choose Well Life GP Clinic?

  • Comprehensive insight in one go – the Alex3 looks for sensitisation to around 300 allergy triggers in a single small blood sample, covering the full spectrum of common triggers (pollen, pets, dust mites, moulds/yeasts, foods, insect venoms and more) so you understand all the factors behind your symptoms.
  • Modern, molecular accuracy – identifies the exact allergy molecules involved, helping distinguish true allergy from cross-reactivity and guiding safer, more effective treatment (including when immunotherapy may help).
  • Expert-lead care - you will be seen by Dr Lisa Brigstocke, a passionate GP with a specialism in Allergies.
  • Local testing - you don't need to go into London for this test, it all takes place in our Cobham Clinic. We are the first Clinic in the UK to do this test.
  • No need to stop medication - unlike with skin prick testing you don’t need to discontinue medicines beforehand.
  • Small sample, big answers – only a small amount of blood is required.
  • Answers quickly - book in for your results appointment with the same doctor, a week after the test, to get your personalised plan.

What to expect from Well Life GP Clinic

  1. A 40 minute appointment with our allergy expert GP, Dr Lisa Brigstocke, in Cobham to discuss your allergy history as well as taking some blood for the test.
  2. The blood sample is processed in our Clinic, offering a quick turnaround for patients, with results interpreted by our expert GP.
  3. A 20 minute appointment is then made with the GP to discuss the results, typically a week after the first appointment. This appointment includes tailored guidance on avoidance, medicines, and allergy actions plans if appropriate.
  4. Following the results appointment, you will leave the Clinic with clear next steps and practical lifestyle tips to help you feel confident with the knowledge of how to best manage your allergy.

“After a lot of research, I chose Dr Rhea at Aesthetics by Dr Rhea for first time Botox in my forehead. I was initially nervous but Dr Rhea made me feel completely at ease. She was very patient and took the time to understand what I wanted to get out of the treatment and to go through the different options available. The procedure itself was relatively painless and I am absolutely over the moon with the results. I wanted a really soft and natural look, and that is exactly what I got. I have had so many compliments recently on how well I am looking and I can’t thank Dr Rhea enough!”

FAQs

Adult Allergy Testing — FAQs

Q. What test do you use?
A. We use an advanced molecular allergy blood test that screens around 300 potential triggers from a single small blood sample, giving precise, actionable results. It is called the Alex3 and we are the first Clinic in the UK to offer this ground-breaking test.

Q. What is a molecular blood test?
A. It’s a modern test that measures your IgE to individual allergen molecules (components) rather than broad extracts. This helps your clinician tell true allergy from cross-reactivity, understand risk more clearly, and tailor treatment (including whether immunotherapy may help).

Q. Do I need to stop my antihistamines or other medicines first?
A. No. You don’t need to stop medication - the test is independent of your current health status.

Q. Is it a skin-prick test?
A. No - it’s a simple blood test. Compared with traditional skin tests, molecular testing covers many more triggers and offers deeper insight.

Q. Which allergens are covered?
A. A very broad panel: pollens (grass, tree, weed), house-dust mites, pets, moulds/yeasts, foods (grains, nuts/seeds, fruits, legumes), seafood, spices, and insect venoms - selected for clinical relevance.

Q. How much blood is needed?
A. Only a small sample is required and this will be taken in your first appointment with our allergy expert GP.

Q. What is immunotherapy?
A. Allergen immunotherapy is a treatment that helps re-train your immune system to be less reactive to a specific allergen. It involves regular exposure to tiny, precisely measured doses of the allergen over time.

  • How it’s given: either tablets/drops under the tongue (SLIT) taken at home after the first supervised dose, or injections in clinic (SCIT) at set intervals.

  • Safety & suitability: not everyone is a candidate; your clinician will assess you. Side-effects are usually mild; supervised care keeps the process safe.
  • Who it’s for: most often used for hay fever (pollens), house-dust mite, pet dander, and insect venom allergy. It’s not typically used for most food allergies.
  • Benefits: can reduce symptoms and medication use and may have long-term, disease-modifying effects after a typical 3-year course.

Q. How will this help my treatment?
A. Results guide practical avoidance advice, medication plans, and where appropriate, immunotherapy. The goal is to focus on what truly benefits you.

Q. Why test rather than just treat symptoms?

A. Undetected allergy can worsen over time (for example, respiratory allergy moving toward asthma), and some triggers (foods, insect venoms) may carry serious risk. Knowing your profile supports safer, proactive care.

Q. What happens after my blood test?
A. You will be asked to make a 20 minute follow-up appointment with the doctor a week after your blood test to explain your results in plain language, answer questions, and agree clear next steps. You’ll also receive your report for easy reference.

Q. Do you test children?
A. The testing process for children is being finalised and we hope to announce this imminently.

Q. How do I book an appointment?
A. Please use the button below to contact our front of house team who will contact you to make an appointment with Dr Brigstocke to start your allergy testing journey today.
