Think you have ADHD? Signs to look out for how to get assessed

If you’ve been wondering whether your struggles with focus, organisation, procrastination or restlessness could be ADHD, you’re not alone.

ADHD-like symptoms can also come from (or sit alongside) anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep problems, hormonal changes, thyroid issues and burnout. Clinicians look for along-standing pattern (often since childhood), across different settings, that causes real impact, which is why an assessment matters.

Signs to look out for

- Attention & follow-through: you’re easily distracted, lose track of tasks, struggle to finish admin, or need intense pressure to start - these patterns are often linked to executive dysfunction.

- Organisation & time: chronic lateness, time-blindness, messy planning, misplacing essentials, forgetting appointments/messages.

- Restlessness & impulsivity: feeling internally “on the go”, fidgeting  ,interrupting, blurting things out, impulsive spending/decisions.

- Overwhelm & emotions: feeling stuck, shutting down when there’s too much to do, big frustration, or frequent burnout cycles and emotional dysregulation.

- Hyperfocus: you can concentrate for hours on what’s interesting - then find it hard to switch or stop.

If the above signs are familiar but you’re still not 100% sure, a quiz can be a helpful starting point, but it can’t confirm a diagnosis. Our ADHD screening quiz can help give you some additional clarity.

Then, depending on the outcome, there are several options for assessment, both with us here at Well Life Clinic or more broadly within the NHS.

We offer private ADHD assessments for both adults and children, as well as NHS-funded adult ADHD assessments (18+) via the Right to Choose pathway.  In England, you can request an NHS Right to Choose ADHD referral to your clinic of choice. For this, you’ll just need a referral letter from your GP and we’ll take care of the rest.  We have a dedicated Right to Choose website which has full details on the process.

For many, an ADHD diagnosis can be reassuring and practical, particularly when symptoms affect daily functioning, relationships, or mental health. It can unlock evidence‑based support, reasonable adjustments at work or in education, and a clearer explanation for long‑term challenges often mistaken for laziness or a lack of effort. It may also provide access to ADHD medication, which can help manage symptoms for some people.
